A cost-effective solution for indoor localization in a factory

In this project we were tasked with tracking small individual components in a factory – without introducing significant cost which would scale with increasing manufacturing plant sizes or the scope of necessary tracking. Utilizing the existing Wi-Fi network we were able to localize small parts in their respective manufacturing step.

Challenge

Most indoor localization systems require both custom-mounted hardware to cover a certain area, as well as mobile receivers, or tags. Cost increases with the area of the monitored location and the number of monitored parts – our customer was looking for a cost-efficient solution for this

The
Solution

After testing several wireless positioning technologies including BLE, Wi-Fi, and UWB, the Wi-Fi fingerprint positioning system was found to be the best trade-off between precision, robustness and cost. The solution can be located within a few meters of accuracy while having no need to deploy a complete radio infrastructure to power the system.
