Das Ziel
Realize BMW’s concept for the future of mobility with the technologies that we have at hand today in a team of highly capable project partners.
Die Lösung
The BMW i Interaction Ease – a groundbreaking, fully functional concept focusing on natural and intuitive interaction for the best travel experience.
Die Auswirkung
A powerful tech statement at CES 2020 and a strong foundation for the future of mobility. With the technologies of today, we can build the cars of tomorrow.
Creating the car travel experience of the future
BMW approached us and the other project partners with their ideas. The interior of the future comes to life with the technologies of the future and that is why the whole ‚i Interaction Ease‘ concept focuses on innovative human-machine interactions. Key questions that BMW and all the project partners tackled were:
What enables you to interact with your environment? How do you communicate with your car? How can you interact with your car naturally and intuitively?
Building a central intelligence for the car
It was obvious that we were going to use several different emerging technologies to realize the concept. But the second challenge was how to integrate them into a seamless and user-friendly system. How could we create a car intelligence that coordinates the interaction between the different systems and thus creates the natural and intuitive interaction that we wanted to create?
For the CES 2020, BMW needed a working prototype of their mobility concept of the future focusing on enabling natural and intuitive interaction with today’s technologies.

Gaze-recognition for natural user interactions
BMW tackled the challenge step by step and took different best-in-class project partners on board to create the best quality for each sub-system. We took over the integration of each subsystem to ensure seamless user interaction. One exemplary key feature was the interaction with the environment. This is how it works: Gaze-recognition cameras see what you are looking at. AR icons get displayed and hand-recognition cameras detect what you are “clicking“ on. Example? You drive through a street, look at a restaurant, and automatically get its menu displayed on your windscreen. That is what BMW calls natural interaction with the environment.
An Intelligent Personal Assistant to enable a seamless workflow
What allows the seamless workflow of geolocation, gaze- recognition, and AR windscreens? An Intelligent Personal Assistant – or how we call it: IPA. It is the car‘s brain; all the different sub-systems with its different technologies come together here to enable the best travel experience possible. It is a software that does not just coordinate the different sub-systems with its numerous technologies but that also learns about you as a passenger, e.g. your habits, your preferences, and your schedule.
The future of mobility is here
Just in time for the CES 2020 in Las Vegas, BMW, Motius and all the other project partners created the future of mobility: a truly Intelligent Personal Assistant for your car, with usability that is extraordinarily intuitive. The BMW ‘i Interaction Ease’ enables the best travel experience possible.
We also delivered an important tech message: we are able to build the future of mobility with cutting-edge technologies that we have at hand today.
With this being possible now, the question is:
What else is there to come? How can we use other emerging technologies to further enhance the travel experience? The BMW ‘i Interaction Ease’ is a foundation for everything there is to come in the future of mobility. Check it out in the product video:
