Digitizing the Construction Industry With Rehau

Client Rehau User Centric Design

Jun 2022,

„Working as a hybrid project team with Motius and Rehau colleagues was very valuable and enabled us to iterate the solution concept several times.”

Anja Hornikel, Innovation Architect & Partnermanagement EuerZuhause.de

The Goal

Develop a digital solution to bring together different stakeholders in the building construction industry and therefore improve current workflows. Create a holistic product that is needed and accepted by the rarely digitized construction industry.

The Solution

Throughout a design thinking project, a prototype was developed together with Rehau, based on a well-developed UX process and value proposition to tackle the business opportunity in this industry. A main key success factor in this project was the close collaboration between the teams at Motius and Rehau throughout the whole project.

The Impact

The holistically developed product concept enabled Rehau to now launch a successful and needed product on the market. The value proposition and tailor-made product is a pioneer in the old-fashioned construction industry.

Digitizing an Analog Industry

If you want to plan and build a modular building, it is a huge challenge to get an overview of the available solutions as well as to have a smooth process with the various stakeholders, from architects to modular constructors. Together with our project partner Rehau we wanted to change this and bring digital innovation into the traditionally analog construction industry.

Developing a product in the barely digitized construction industry was very hard to tackle at first sight. Therefore, we concentrated on listening to our future users and understanding their needs, concerns, and wishes. With a full design thinking cycle at which we conducted all stages – from empathizing to testing the MVP – we ensured to design a platform that is human-centered, meets the business requirements, and is a true innovation.

Understanding Stakeholders Needs

In this project, the team started from scratch. The goal was to create an MVP (minimum viable product) within nine months and several design sprints in between followed in that period of time. The innovation design cluster followed a classical design thinking process at the beginning which started in an empathizing phase with cross-industry research and open user interviews. The following defining phase ended in a user journey map as well as a persona modeling. Based on the gained knowledge, the ideating phase with several design thinking workshops started. All workshops included different stakeholders such as Rehau colleagues, building developers, architects, modular constructors, etc. The result of this phase was one potential idea that could result in a new digital platform in the construction industry.

From PoC to Market-Ready MVP

To test if the result would be successful (PoC), a business model canvas was created and a lo-fi prototype as a base for user interviews was designed. The created prototype got evaluated with user interviews and the collected feedback got implemented in the iteration phase. At the end of the project, the consolidated findings were the starting point for Rehau to refine, iterate and finally go to the market with their product.

Based on our support during the first phase of ideation and prototyping, Rehau internally advanced the project and conducted another user feedback iteration. After adjusting the focus and target group of the project further, they were able to launch a website to test the defined hypothesis in the market. Their product – a matchmaking platform for finding the perfect home and suitable building contractors  – is now further developed to be successful in the construction industry.

Our Holistic Design Approach

  • Concept development
  • Business model canvas
  • Value proposition modeling
  • User journey map
  • User stories

3) Prototype

  • Wireframes
  • Information architecture
  • Lo-fi prototypes
  • Animated clickdummy for testing

4) Test & Iterate

  • User tests
  • Concept iteration
