Next level VR – creating a mixed reality game

Augmented & Virtual Reality

Oct 2020,

In this project we developed a system which adds an external camera to a VR headset to create a mixed reality experience. Our focus was on the initial localization and environment detection of the camera as well as feeding the video intake to the headset’s display at an acceptable latency level.

The
Challenge

This was a feasibility project. The goal was to create a mixed reality application from virtual reality applications. The concrete idea? Let the user interact with a real table in a virtual game.

The
Solution

We provided our customer with a CPU-based SLAM solution that is beneficial because it provides an embedded solution in the production phase. We researched different technologies for video streaming and implemented that within a workbench.

The
Impact

A proof of concept to show the feasibility of the idea. Our focus was on the initial localization and environment detection of the camera as well as feeding the video intake to the headset’s display at an acceptable latency level.
