HoloActive Touch – A Hologram with haptic Feedback

Augmented & Virtual Reality

Oct 2020,

In order to implement BMW’s concept of a unique human-machine communication for the CES, Motius has developed a system in cooperation with three companies that controls the car’s multimedia offering using holograms and haptic resonance.

The
Challenge

In the future passengers will be able to engage with non-driving related tasks while driving in a car and interact with the car in a new manner.

The
Solution

We developed a hologram as an UX element for the entertainment system. The user could feel a haptic feedback in his fingertip when pressing the floating holographic controls. This was achieved through the combination and calibration of two independently coordinated systems which could generate the haptic feedback at the desired position.

The
Impact

The HoloActive Touch Project was a highlight at the BMW i Inside Future presentation at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas 2017. With a futuristic interieur concept BMW wanted to present the potential future of the automobile and show how the human-car interaction can be revolutionized, far exceeding the pure driving experience
